The 2011 Roseau County American Cancer Society “Relay For Life” will be held on Friday August 12 at the Roseau City Park. Every one is geared up and eager for this special event. The 15^th annual Roseau County Relay For Life theme is “Happy Birthday IS a Victory Song.” Teams have been working hard throughout the year to make this Relay a big success as it has over the past years. Volunteers are the backbone to making the Relay run so smooth. If you would like to help with the Relay – your help would be appreciated and without saying needed. Help is always needed for set up, luminaries, food serving, and/or cleanup. Just give one of the chairmen a call. Volunteers DO make a difference.

The Cancer Survivors will be introduced and will lead the first lap of the Relay.

The Service of Hope and Healing with the Roseau Ministerial Society will be at dusk (approximately 9 PM) with the lighting of the luminaries to follow.

There will be prizes awarded for the Best Decorated Campsite and the Best Fundraiser as voted upon by the people attending.

Following the Service of Hope and the lighting of the luminaries, Dynasty DJ will be providing Karaoke for anyone who’d like to participate. There will be entertainment from midnight until dawn. Some of the events that are in the works include: Zumba, Bingo, and a Cakewalk just to mention a few. At 3 AM the band “With a Voice” from Warroad will be performing for the young people during a “Teen Hour of Inspiration.” The final lap will be at 5:00 AM and at 5:30 AM Saturday morning August 13^th the closing ceremony will be held.

The HOUR of HOPE is returning this year. You may have an hour of the Relay dedicated in honor of or in memory of a loved one for a $100 donation.

The purpose of the Relay For Life event is raise money through donations to help fight cancer. This event also gives us the opportunity to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have given their life to cancer. Luminaries may be purchased in honor or in memory of family or friends who have been touched by cancer. These luminaries will line the walking path throughout the park. Luminaries can be purchased at various places of business: Citizen State Bank of Roseau, Border State Bank of Roseau, Badger and Greenbush, Doug’s at Warroad and Roseau, and the Roseau and Warroad Altru Clinics. Teams are encouraged to turn in the list of names they have so far from the luminary bags so the committee can get a head start on the Memory Wall.

The Roseau County Relay For Life theme “Happy Birthday IS a Victory Song” goes right along with the American Cancer Society’s theme of “Creating a World with More Birthdays. The donations received are used in many areas: Cancer research, Patient services in Roseau County, Advocacy promoting the prevention of cancer, and Cancer Education in Roseau County. Gas cards, volunteer drivers, equipment, wigs, the Reach to Recovery program, cancer support groups and educational materials are just a few of the ways these donations come back to help patients in Roseau County.

The donations over the past 14 years have grown as well as the attendance. In 1997 $16,423.00 was received in donations and in 2010 $86,509.00 was received. A total of over $658,000. has been raised in donation over the past 14 years. That is remarkable! It shows the dedication and commitment of all the residents of Roseau County to fight and stomp out cancer!

Let’s make the 2011 “Happy Birthday IS a Victory Song” Relay For Life the biggest VICTORY success Roseau County has seen.

The Mushroom Picker - a play about a US WWII soldier of Czech decent who served in the Czech Republic. The play is a true story put on by hs grandson Patrick Dewane. More info at themushroompicker.com – today at 7 PM at the Roseau School Theatre.

Roseau Eagles Auxillary hosts a fundraiser for community gas cards starting at 3 PM Friday and Saturday and Sunday at noon. On Friday and Saturday there will be a DJ and kareoke. A large variety of food, games and prizes, and nightly bonfires.

A benefit supper and raffle for Kya Lee takes place September 1^st, from 4 to 7 PM at Roseau City Center – Menu of pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad and more plus great raffle items – free will donation for the meal, raffle tickets available for purchase.

Kya is an RHS senior and the daughter of Steven and Connie Lee and a member of the hockey, tennis and softball teams. She was diagnosed with aplastic anemia and has been receiving care in Milwaukee for the past three months. She recently received a bone marrow transplant from her sister Tara and will be recovering in Milwaukee. Supplemental funds provided by Lake of the Woods – Roseau County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans – a benefit account has been established at Citizens State Bank.

The Relay For Life is just around the corner! The 2010 Roseau County “Relay For Life” will be held on Friday August 13^th at the Roseau City Park. The planning for the 14^th annual Roseau County “Creating A World With More Birthdays” Relay is almost complete. Teams, old and new, have been working hard this past year to make this Relay a bigger success than ever before. Sponsors have been as generous as ever. Volunteers that are always eager to help with the Relay events are totally appreciated. If you would like to help with the set up, the luminaries, food serving, and/or clean up, just give one of the chairmen a call. Volunteers declare that the reason they give of their time and talents is because they all want to make a difference.

Relay For Life - AGENDA

The Relay will begin on Friday, August 13 with the Team and Survivor registration at 5:00 PM. Registration will continue until 6:30 PM. The meal will be served by the Knights of Columbus from 5:00-6:30 PM. (Free will offering) Lois & Lois will entertain during the meal. At 6:45 PM the Cub Scouts will present the Colors with the Star Spangled Banner sung by Pam Pearson. The opening ceremony will begin at 7:00 PM with MCs Evie Halvorson & Zach Swanson of the EZ Morning Show with program music by Rachel Bukowski and Alex Evans. The Cancer Survivors will be introduced and will lead the first lap of the Relay.

The Service of Hope and Healing with the Roseau Ministerial Society and music provided by Katrice and Ray Housker will be at dusk (approximately 9 PM) with the lighting of the luminaries to follow.

The “Relay For Life” is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund raiser. Involvement by participants who have dealt with cancer themselves is proof of the progress that has been made in reducing cancer death rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment. REMEMBER - It is never too late to enter a team.

Co-Chairmen Natali Anderson and Amy Hove have challenged Roseau County to donate $20.00 for every person in Roseau County. Can you imagine how great that would be? Whatever the case may be – Roseau County - let’s make this the best Roseau County Relay For Life there has been. Let’s “Create a World With More Birthdays.”

Community Update for Tuesday, June 8th 2010

Tomorrow from noon to 8 PM, Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be hosting a rummage sale which also runs from 8 AM to 3:30 PM on Thursday. All funds benefit a scholarship fund that helps families send their children to missions trips, camps and youth rallies.

Make A Splash - READ! with the Zoo Man and his animal friends is tomorrow (Wednesday)

This program lasts around 40 minutes and promotes reading and educational fun. See a variety of live animals including reptiles, mammals and birds! Funding for the event is provided by Northwest Regional Library.

Also on Thursday, the American Cancer Society hosts their 3rd Annual Cancer Survivors & Caregivers Picnic at Roseau City Park from 5-7 PM. All survivors, a guest, and caregivers are invited to enjoy an evening of entertainment, food and conversation at no charge. Contact Barb Erickson for more details at 463-4703.

Every Thursday evening at 7 PM, there are Al-Anon meetings for friends and families affected by another's drinking - those meetings take place at the Roseau Hospital meeting room.

On Saturday, the Roseau Eagles Fun Run starts at noon with live music from Grindstone starting at 8 PM. Bring your ATVs, cars and bikes for a day of fun at the Roseau Eagles.

Roseau High School 2010 Film Premiere - Wednesday May 26th

On May 26, the Roseau High School Advanced English class will be hosting the 2010 Film Premiere in the RHS Theater.

While this is a non-traditional assignment, the students learn to use a variety of skills they will use outside of school. Time management and organization were especially challenging for us, since there are so many activities going on in the spring. This project only added to the chaos.

The students, after breaking up into groups, had to: write a script that their movie would follow, create/find costumes and props, scout film locations, plan each scene, film the scenes, and edit the scenes into a final product. It was a lot of work and took a lot of planning.

The films are: Scooby Doo—She Wants you, Mean Girls, Tooken, Trojan War—the Real Story, Harry Potter and the Chamberpot of Secrets, Jumanji—the Director’s Cut.

The Red Carpet Gala starts at 6:15 P.M. The budding actors, actresses, and filmmakers will be available for pictures.

The films begin showing at 7:00. Admission is free.

Reflections of a Roseau Import.. 5 Years In by Kate Lundquist

It happens on occasion... I try to sleep... but my brain doesn’t shut off. The urge to write emerges and I wander downstairs to release my thoughts. It brings me peace, as I’ve said in previous writings, and I enjoy sharing.

I went to bed this evening reflecting on the fact that this date marks the eve of the five year anniversary of our move to Roseau. Five years ago, we packed up our quaint one bedroom apartment and moved to this town, this house, this community. I’d like to tell you about some of the people that have made our years here memorable, happy, secure, and so special.

Growing up in Duluth, I thought I was really taking a leap by choosing a “tiny” town like Bemidji for college. While I thoroughly enjoyed an amazing four years there, I promised myself, “I will never live in a smaller town than this.” Jacob and I made plans to live the city life, choosing Detroit, MI to begin our careers. To make a long story short, Jake began looking for Minnesota jobs almost immediately. The teaching market was near impossible, Jacob’s job wasn’t the right fit, and we missed our families desperately. A friend told Jacob about Marvin Windows in Warroad, MN.

Jacob came home from the interview and said, “When they took me to lunch, they left their keys IN THIER BRAND NEW TRUCK!” It was a different world up there. :)

I couldn’t wait to tell my family that Jacob was hired and that we’d be moving back. While I’m sure they were thrilled for us, I’ll never forget this response: “Isn’t Warroad just about as far away from anywhere as you can possibly get?” I responded, “Umm..... yes. But we’ll be in Minnesota!!”

We made the move up....and up, and up. 6 miles from Canada! We lived the first 5 months in Warroad and then purchased our home here in Roseau... exactly 5 years ago.

We didn’t know a single soul. No one. I put my name in to begin substitute teaching, but it was slow. I needed a hobby.... SOMETHING to do. I paged through the smallest phone book I had ever seen and found Quilt S’more listed. I had done some babysitting for a family in Bemidji, and the mother was a quilter. The art of it fascinated me, and I thought I may take a stab at it.

I wandered in after calling to get the location. It was a house; I was confused. It turns out that the flood that Roseau had in 2002 forced Judy Magnusson to turn her home into her business.... her garage into a fabric shop, and her living room into a quilting classroom. She and her husband Ardell continued to live there. Can you imagine?

“I was wondering if you taught any classes? I don’t sew, haven’t since 7th grade Home Ec, but I’d like to try.” I was in search of a class list or a schedule so that I could return at a later date.

Judy said, “How would you like to learn right now?” She embraced me with her offer, her openness, and kindness; I was shocked. “Really?? Now???” Before long, I had my fabric picked out and she had me sewing. I went back the next day and left with a finished table runner. That was in October. By Christmas, each family member had a quilted item under the Christmas tree. I was hooked. Judy hired me to work at the store that summer, and I started teaching classes. One person’s generosity of time, patience, and teaching, gave me a niche in this community. The quilting ladies were my first friends here; they were my lifeline. Two and three times my age, it didn’t matter. I learned to tolerate coffee and discovered the joys of sitting around a kitchen table just chatting about anything under the sun. I learned a great deal from them. They then celebrated my 24th birthday like I was a star, showering me with quilting goodies and a home made cake. Unforgettable.

When I later expressed concern that Roseau School hadn’t been calling me to substitute teach, Judy marched me into school, gave me a tour, introduced me to the secretaries, and got to the bottom of why I hadn’t been called. My application had never made it to the necessary people. I soon started a very busy substitute teaching career where I was able to meet another plethora of amazing people. Thank you, Judy.

I feel the need to specifically mention Jeff and Sara Olson, two teachers in Roseau. I doubt if I’ve ever really thanked them, and if I did, they would probably wonder why. Jeff teaches science in high school and Sara teaches 4th grade. When I look back on my “rookie” year, no one stands out more than them. They were so friendly and encouraging; it’s just who they are. It meant a lot. It’s such a natural part of their personality, so they probably wouldn’t think they did anything extraordinary, but they did, and I am thankful.

Todd and Sonya Peterson were also some of our first friends. Sonya worked with Jacob, and I quilted with her. They are truly generous in so many ways. While living in Warroad, Jake found a frost bitten and hungry cat outside. We took Jovie, our new family member, to the vet and found that Sonya had already donated a significant portion of the vet bill; it brought me to tears. Sonya also invited me to join the community group Women of Today which puts on activities and events for the town. It was through this group that I made numerous lasting friendships, and it familiarized me with this town. Todd is the one who found our house for us, taking a flyer from a bulletin board and making sure it got to us. We were homeowners shortly after. In addition, the two of them welcomed us to a Bible Study in their home. When Jake’s father suddenly passed away in 2006, Todd and Sonya took the day off of work, put their infant daughter in day care, and made the two hour trip to attend the funeral. Again, unforgettable.

It’s people like the ones mentioned above that that make or break it for people around here. When “imports” land in this north country, it can be difficult to say the least. At first glance, it appears that everyone already knows everyone, everyone seems related, and it can feel so isolated. I wasn’t sure how long I would last. With the help of those people, and many unmentioned others, we grew some roots here. I have come to cherish my life here in Roseau, MN.

This is a town where it can take an eternity to take a walk down Main Street or Center Street because of all of the friendly faces to chat with along the way...other shoppers, other walkers, or neighbors. It’s a place where you walk in to get a hair cut and everyone turns and says, “Hi Kate! How are the kids?” Home, daycare, and work are within a mile radius, food pours in after the birth of a child, and when I’m lucky, certain servers remember that I like many lemons in my water. :) When someone gets ill, benefit dinners are held. If someone has a need, donations are collected. Our newspaper comes out once a week, and it’s typically all good news. Where else will your local spelling bee champ make the front page headlines? We are distant from large cities bustling with arts and culture, but we have people who work very hard to bring it here to us. The County Fair is by far the most anticipated event all year, besides the start of rummage sale season in April/May. :) People do indeed leave their keys in their car (in no way promoting this), and kids can play outside freely. The local businesses continually donate to innumerable causes and events, and our firefighters work on a volunteer basis.

There is a warmth here in this bitter cold part of the state, that I believe to be a rare and fleeting entity. As more and more homes go on the market, and as our local schools face drastic declining enrollment, I pray that this community will be able to rally...to prosper and thrive for centuries to come.

Recently, my alma mater, Duluth East, played the Roseau Rams for the MN State Class AA consolation championship. I wondered briefly, “If I were at the game, where would I sit?” One of my dearest friends, Emily, stated, “Do you really have to ask?” She was right. I’ll always have a very large place in my heart for Duluth, but Roseau is now our home.

4-H Photography Workshop coming April 24th

"Through the Lens of a Camera" a 4-H workshop is Saturday April 24 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau. There are two sessions. Session 1 is from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm and is designed for adults and youth in grades 7-12. Session 2 is from 1:00 – 2:30 pm and is for youth in grades 3-6.

This is a great hands on learning opportunity to learn about photography. You do not need to be a 4-H member to participate. Both sessions will begin with an overview of digital photography, photo tips and techniques and a hands-on camera session with downloading and editing photos on the computer, printing a best photo, and making a greeting card.

Session 1 will also include a train-the-trainer leadership component. Morning participants will develop skills to teach the session in the afternoon and/or bring the information back to their club. Adults are welcome to participate.

Our presenter is Joe Courneya who has 25 years of experience in 4-H youth development including River Watch curriculum development, archery in the schools, shooting sports, photography and other science and technology activities as part of his hands-on approach to learning.

Free Training - Salvation Army Emergency Response

Ever want to serve in a disaster? The Salvation Army Emergency Services is holding an introductory course designed to prepare volunteers who wish to respond both locally and nationally to disasters. The goal is to develop the disaster responder's skills and knowledge, better preparing and equipping them to respond to disasters in a prompt, efficient and effective manner.

There is little time for training during a disaster so advanced training is crucial to provide effective service to victims. We will also be organizing a local Salvation Army response team for crisis response within the Northwest Minnesota area.

There is no charge for this training but space is limited to 25 participants per class. The training is scheduled on April 16, 2010 at the Roseau Fire Hall.Class hours are 8:15 to 4:00.

Shelly Kofstad Benefit April 8th

Plan now to attend a very important benefit dinner for Shelly Kofstad. Shelly has been through extremely challenging times in her treatments for breast cancer, and there have been complications that made it even more difficult financially.

This Thursday (April 8th) from 4-7:30 PM at Roseau Covenant Church, a benefit dinner will be held. Lots of delicious food is on the menu, including homemade meatballs, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn, coleslaw, rolls, bars, coffee and koolaid.

Suggested donation is $8 for adults and kids 10 and under $4. Takeout plates are available - just call 463-3420.

There's also a great raffle planned with 4 $50 gas cards from CHS, an electric grill, Belgian waffle maker, stainless steel slow cooker and various other items! Tickets are $5 or 5 tickets for $25. Food is served till they run out.

We here at ConnectNorthland believe in the importance of helping each other, neighbor to neighbor, so if you can attend this benefit or just grab a takeout plate on the way home from work, please do so and let's help Shelly and her family out during this difficult time.

Roseau Rams Fan Bus to TRF tomorrow!

There will be a fan bus to TRF on Wednesday for the boys hockey section 8aa final. Cost of the bus is $8, plus your ticket ($7 for adults, $4 for students.) Students in grades 7-12 must have a note from a parent giving permission to ride the bus. We must have payment before we can put you on the list. Younger students must be accompanied by a parent. Bus will leave the school parking lot at 5:00 pm. It will return immediately after the game.

A benefit for Jerry Jerome, who is undergoing cancer treatment takes place at Four Season Senior Center in Roseau this Saturday the 13th. From 3:30 to 7 Pm, enjoy a baked potato and chili bar along with entertainment from the Hwy. 11 Ramblers. A free will offering will be taken.

Throughout the month of February, carts are set up at Dougs Supermarket in both Roseau and Warroad to collect baby formula for orphanges in Haiti. Please donate to this important cause.

A Bluewater Camp Rally will be held Sunday, Feb. 28th at Roseau Evangelical Covenant Church from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This is the beginning of Bluewater's Registration for 2010! Come get signed up. Bring all your friends. The person who brings the most people WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN TO BLUEWATER... will win a super stellar prize!!! The Theme for the 2010 Relay For Life is “Creating a World With More Birthdays.” In other words – a world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays. The American Cancer Society encourages their goals: to stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.

A sweet seat fundraiser for the Roseau High School Greece Team takes place on the 14^th @ the Roseau vs Warroad boys hockey game at Roseau’s Memorial Arena. Tickets will be sold at school that day, during the JV game and at doors prior to game start. Drawing will be held before game start. Winner sits in the broadcast booth with Wild 102.1 Rams sportscaster Zach Swanson, and will get a pop of choice and slice of pizza while they enjoy a birds eye view of the game. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for 20 tickets.

The annual meeting of the Roseau Civic & Commerce takes place Monday, Jan. 18^th at Roseau City Center. Cocktails @ 6:30 PM and dinner @ 7 PM. Dinner is Prime Rib or Shrimp.

A gathering of business and professionals working together to promote the expansion and civic welfare of Roseau. Civic and community minded people, working together to make Roseau the best possible community to live and work in.

At this Annual Meeting, new board members will be elected from the Roseau community. There will be updates with guest speakers from Polaris, City of Roseau, and Lifecare Medical Center, along with a financial report from the Civic and Commerce. It will be an evening of good food, fellowship, and information.

Dan Jones’ senior English class is studying Greek mythology and raising funds for a class trip to Greece in June. They will be be serving a spaghetti supper this Tuesday, Dec. 29^th from 4-7 PM at the Roseau American Legion. Menu includes delicious spaghetti, breadsticks, coleslaw, beverage and dessert bars for $6. Area businesses have donated prizes for a raffle also!

Al-Anon meetings for friends and family affected by problem drinking meet at the Roseau Hospital meeting room each Thursday at 7 PM.

State conservation authorities would like to remind us all that shelters on MN waters need either the:

1. Complete name and address

2. Driver’s license number

3. The nine-digit DNR numbr on the license of the owner

Plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height. This does include ice skating warming houses and other structures placed on ice.

Other regulations include:

Any shelter left on the ice at any time between midnight and one hour before sunrise requires a shelter license.

Department of Public Safety requires trailers used to haul structures or used for fishing to be registered. For information, contact your local Deputy Registrar.

Tags, furnished with license, must be attached to the exterior in a readibly visible location.

Shelters left on ice overnight need at least 2 square inches of reflective material on each side.

A shelter license is not required on border waters with IA, ND, SD & WI.

On border waters, shelters must comply with the identification requirements of the state for which the angler is licensed.

No shelter may be erected within 10 feet of an existing shelter.

There's been a buzz surrounding the first Market Day, Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM at Doug's Supermarket in Roseau. With local artists, crafts, and homegrown produce, it's worth a visit and while you're there, please make a donation to the local food shelf of cash or canned goods. There's more need lately for their services, so let's make sure none of our neighbors go hungry.

Also in Roseau, at 10 AM visit the Here For Life Expo at Roseau City Center. Health care is a hot topic lately, so be informed about what you can do to stay well and keep your medical costs down. ConnectNorthland also joins with our community in recognizing the life and accomplishments of William S. Marvin. As president of Marvin Windows since 1960, his leadership and devotion to the community made Marvin Windows not only a success, but a positive force in this area. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bill and Margaret Marvin Fund (benefitting Warroad High School scholarships), the Warroad Senior Living Fund, or the Warroad Swim Program Fund. Mr. Marvin passed away August 31st at 92 years of age. Visitation is from 5-7 PM Thursday at the William S. Marvin Visitors Center in Warroad, with funeral services held Friday morning, 11 AM at the Warroad High School gymnasium.

The Warroad Summer Theatre Company ended their 29th season with their annual Season Awards Banquet last night at the American Legion in Warroad. Highlighting the evening were the co- Masters of Ceremonies, Ben Johnston and Robert Baril who guided the audience through special music from the guitar of Anthony Quinn and a special number from the Popcorn players production “DooWop-Red Riding Hood. as well as some clever comic routines from the Mcs. The Welcome to Roseau Committee is sponsoring a picnic today at Roseau City Park for all new residents that have moved into the Roseau area. There will be volleyball, horseshoes, bean bag games, and playground available along with door prizes, food and fun for all. The Lake of The Woods County 8th Annual Relay for Life will be on Saturday, located at Timber Mill Community Park on the east side of Baudette. Opening ceremonies at 2 PM, supper at 6 PM for $3 per person. Luminary lighting starts at 9:30 PM.

Thanks to all the volunteers, bands and fans who made this first event an indisputable success and helped our neighbors in need of assistance from the Thief River Falls food shelf. If you're a fan of regional rock and roll, there's still time to get your tickets for Feedback Fest 09. It's happening in Thief River Falls @ Epiphany Station on Saturday at 4 PM. Roseau band Visions Foreshadow are a part of the lineup along with regional favorites Novice Nation, Fadesaway, Asher and Kaboose who has had success on college radio nationally, charting in College Music Journal.

The great thing about Feedback Fest is that all proceeds benefit the Thief River Falls Food Shelf, which in these challenging times works hard to help those in need and relys entirely on community support. First Baptist Church of Roseau wraps up their Vacation Bible School program tonight at 6 PM. It's been a fun journey through Australia on the Boomerang Express and FBC thanks all the parents, volunteers and kids for being a part of this successful program where "it all comes back to Jesus."

Thursday, celebrate great deals with Roseau's Krazy Dayz. One of the values core to us at ConnectNorthland is community, and keeping our shopping dollars at home is incredibly important to our local merchants, providing jobs and giving back to local charity. Support Roseau's businesses - they're offering great deals on Thursday, and all year round!

Also this Saturday is the Roseau River Fishing Tournament brought to you by Denny's Outdoor Sports, give them a call for registration information and possibly win cash prizes!

Faith and Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church of Badger is holding a unique campfire church service tonight at 6 PM. Brats and Polish sausage provided. Bring a lawn chair and your potluck dish and enjoy an evening of worship and family fun. Holy Communion will be celebrated. Location is the Arne & Marlene Isane home in Badger.

If you're a fan of regional rock and roll, the first annual Feedback Fest 09 takes place Saturday @ 4 PM. Location is Epiphany Station in Thief River Falls. All proceeds from the concert benefit the Thief River Falls Food Shelf. Demand is at an all time high for their service, but contributions are alarmingly low. If you've got kids, the Roseau County Museum has a fun treasure hunt program now through the 21st of August. Each day from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, stop by for new objects to find while exploring the history of our area. Free DQ Blizzards given away in the drawing each week, thanks to Dan & Lisa at the Roseau Dairy Queen.

First Baptist Church of Roseau is presenting the Australian themed vacation Bible school program "Boomerang Express" 6 - 8:30 PM @ the church through Friday. Accents and bloomin' onions optional.

With apologies to Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon, here's what's going on this weekend:

Explore history with the 37th Annual Lake of the Woods Steam and Gas Show, with steam traction engines, vintage tractors and other early 1900s farm equipment. The show takes place 9 miles north of Roosevelt on the Grove family farm, near the intersection of County Hwy 17 and County Road 50.

The annual Woodcarvers Festival is taking place over the weekend at Lake Bronson State Park. Admission is free and there will be woodcarving competitions, entertainment, crafts, car show a children's carnival, and a steak fry plus pie and ice cream social.

In Roseau, if you're involved in the VBS program at First Baptist Church, there will be a work night at 6:30 PM to prepare this year's program "Boomerang Express." Also a good chance to practice your Aussie accent.

Tomorrow, our friends at Relay For Life are holding a Taco in a Bag fundraiser at the Cenex lot in Warroad. From 11 AM to 4 PM, and they'll also have root beer floats. All proceeds benefit our local Roseau County Relay for Life!

Friday thru Sunday, there's the Annual Woodcarver's Festival at Lake Bronson State Park. Saturday and Sunday, it's the 37th Annual Lake of the Woods Steam and Gas Show, located 9 miles north of Roosevelt on the Grove family farm. That's near the intersection of County Hwy 17 & County Road 50.

Menu for the remainder of the week at 4 Seasons Senior Center of Roseau:

Thursday, July 30th - BBQ Chicken, potato salad, green beans, bread & milk, and dessert.

Friday, July 31st - Spaghetti noodles with italian meat sauce, a lettuce salad & cauliflower, garlic bread, milk & dessert.

$3.50 is the suggested donation for dinner for seniors, 60 and over.

Here's what's going on around our community:

In Warroad, the Popcorn Players theatre troupe directed by Bonnie Nordvall will be performing "Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood" a 50s themed take on the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Show starts at 7 PM through August 1st in the theatre at Warroad High School. For tickets, call 386-3435, or stop by the box office afternoons from 1-4 PM.

If you missed the Woodpicks opening for Ashlee Hewitt last week, you can catch them in a fundraising breakfast performance Sunday at Greenbush Manor, that event starts at 10 AM.

Friday at the Roseau County Fair

Friday's the last day of the Roseau County Fair but there's still lots of fun to be had!

Then tonight, the big fireworks extravaganza, sponsored by Polaris. We really appreciate their commitment to Roseau and their work in making the last night of the fair so special.

Don't forget to join us in Warroad tomorrow on the banks of the Warroad River for Fish Fest 2009. Proceeds benefit the area Boy Scouts, and you can sample ten teams competing for best walleye on the lake!

Slightly cloudy today, but that's no reason not to come to the Roseau County Fair and have a great time.

Our friends at Roseau County Relay For Life are holding a Taco in a Bag fundraiser. It's happening Thursday, July 30th in the Cenex lot in Warroad. Starting at 11 AM and running till 4 PM. They will also have root beer floats. Mmm. Root beer. Luminaries will be available to design and purchase, with all proceeds benefitting Roseau County Relay for Life.

Local favorite Cathy Erickson performs on the Border State Bank Mini-Stage this afternoon at 1 PM. Cathy always puts on a fun show, in addition to her radio program on Pioneer 90.1 FM in Thief River Falls on Monday evenings. She's an important part of our regional music community and we welcome her to the fair!

If you're a gospel fan and missed the Overtones on Church Night, they will be performing at the Border State Bank Mini-Stage at 4 PM today. Complete entertainment schedules for the fair can be found at ConnectNorthland.org.

Roseau County Fair - Tuesday Evening Report

A great first day of food and fun at the Roseau County Fair.

First of all, thanks to all of you who dropped by the Connect Northland booth and gave your opinions, and signed up for our Sony HD Radio with IPod dock raffle. It's always a pleasure meeting our friends and neighbors.

A huge hit this year seems to be the Lifecare Medical booth. Right across from ours, they are offering chances at an IPod with their mini-golf green. Kids and adults alike are having a blast trying to make that hole in one for more chances at the IPod. There's also a quilt raffle at the Lifecare booth, and more information about healthcare services.

IPods in general seem to be popular at this year's fair, with the Roseau County booth offering a chance at an IPod in exchange for a 3 question survey about county government. Great chance to get your opinion heard and win something at the same time. Your kids can also register for a chance to have a police escort to school!

Politics are represented on both sides, by the Roseau County DFL and Republican booths. State Representative Dave Olin was on hand at the DFL booth this afternoon.

Wibbels Photography is making quite a splash with their HD TV display of quality local photographs. So many people are recognizing people they know.

It's been a great first evening at the Roseau County Fair. Hopefully we'll see more of you tomorrow, to chat about life, media, and the Northland.

Tuesday Fair Update

A great day for the Roseau County Fair, with the parade happening downtown sponsored by the Roseau Women of Today. Here's how the day's looking so far:

5 PM - Exhibits open at the fairgrounds

5:30 PM - Parade on Main Street

6 PM - Carnival opens

7 PM - Horse pull @ the grandstand

Our raffle prize this year is a very cool Sony audio system. It looks great and sounds even better. In addition to AM and FM, it also has impressive new HD Radio capabilities, and will charge any model of IPod or IPhone as it plays your choice of music or talk.

All proceeds from this raffle benefit our parent organization True North Community Outreach as we host and improve ConnectNorthland.org and work to build a full time, family friendly community FM radio station.
